A short Chinese man seems to be the tallest in the world right now. Jack Ma (Ma Yun), 51, is executive chairman of Alibaba Group, a business-to-business online platform. On Sept 19, 2014 Alibaba went public on the New York Stock Exchange , raising $25 billion through an IPO (首次公开发行股票), the biggest in US history, Ma, a formal English teacher, has become the richest man on the Chinese mainland.
Born in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, Ma grew up as a happy kid. At the age of 12, he wanted to learn English. Every morning, he awoke at 5am, cycled 40 minute to a hotel near the West Lake where he could chat to foreign tourists. He did it for nine years, rain or shine. The experience made him a fluent English speaker and also opened his eyes to the wider world.
In a 1995 trip to the US, Ma was showed the Internet for the first time. He searched Yahoo using the word “Beer” and found that there was nothing in there about China. Seeing the chance, Ma returned to China and set up a website called China Pages without even knowing much about computers.
Four years later, 18 people including Ma, his wife and his friends founded Alibaba in Hangzhou. He believed in the Internet business potential when few other Chinese did. People called him “Crazy Jack Ma”. But 15 years later Alibaba has developed into the world’s largest e-commerce company, owning popular shopping websites like Taobao and Tmall. It makes more profit online than Amazon and e-Bay combined.
No one thinks he’s mad now. Ma’s favorite line has been printed on Alibaba’s souvenir T-shirts. It reads: “Everybody should have a dream comes true. What if that dream comes true?”

For years we have been dieting strictly after the year-end overeating, afraid that when summer comes, the bigger size we have grown won’t support how we ate. Now scientists say it’s a little insect that causes obesity(肥胖症).
As the holiday season with its rich meals arrives, millions of food lovers are paying attention to their build. But scientists have found that overweight is not about too much Christmas turkey or hot chocolates, but some gut bacteria (肠道细菌).Chinese scientists recently discovered a type of gut bacteria that may cause obesity. A research team led by Zhao Liping, a doctor in Shanghai, has discovered a general link between a particular kind of bacteria and unusual overweight.
For long scientists have believed that gut bacteria may play a very important role in overweight, but they had never been able to find the answer. While a link was believed to be there, proving it was another matter. “The list of diseases is just growing and growing,” says a famous American doctor Lita. “But the problem is that we’re only able to look at associations and aren’t yet able to finish the studies.”
In the recent medical study, researchers found too much endotoxin (内毒素) led to 35 percent of the gut bacteria in a heavy patient whose weight was 175 kg. With the help of this information, researchers tried to help the patient by feeding him a special food to kill many of his gut bacteria. After 23 weeks, the patient lost 51.4 kg of his weight.

Many parents dream of their children growing into healthy, well adjusted adults, moving out of home and heading out into the big, wide world. But when the couple Monique and Graeme Ford’s three children began to leave the nest, they realized they still had a lot of love to give. After weighing up the pros and cons(利弊)the farmers from Blowhard, north of Ballartat, decided to become foster(代养的) parents.
In five years, they cared for seven different children, and a pair of brothers, aged 10 and 15, and currently their home is called the farm home. The depth of love is obvious to anybody watching Monique and Graeme get along with their foster children, who have been part of the family for more than two years. Monique says it’s important to treat foster kids like your own children.
The experience has opened the minds of Monique, Graeme and their three kids, and make them more aware of the world around them and the different challenges people face.
According to the Foster Care Association of Victoria, the need for new carers is urgent and growing. Monique says she would recommend the experience to everybody.
“To be able to, hopefully, help a child on the right path and set them straight, and know that we’re going to be there forever for them, even when they leave, is really great. It certainly brings you more rewards than what you ever expected,” saysMonique.

In the sixth century BC, western philosophy was born in ancient Greece. One of the earliest of these ancient thinkers was the mathematician Pythagoras who was born in 570 BC. His theory that mathematics can be used to explain everything in the universe has influenced many later generations of thinkers.
Socrates is one of the philosophers whose influence has b een the greatest. He was born around 470 BC in Athens. Socrates was a great doubter who believed that we should question everything. While the earlier thinkers tried to explain the universe, he didn’t believe that this was useful. He taught we should think for ourselves and be true to our ideas and beliefs. In the end, he was condemned(宣判) to death in 399 BC. He was believed to be a dangerous influence because he taught people to question everything, even the law.
Aristotle was another great philosopher whose ideas continue to be studied today. Born in 384 BC, at the age of 17 he was sent to Athens where he lived until 322 BC. Aristotle founded the philosophy of logic which says that there is an explanation for everything that exists. Aristotle also believed that each human being wants a happy life and this can only be achieved by living in a well-ordered society. He also taught that the purpose of government and the state is to make possible the happiness of its citizens. Like Socrates, Aristotle was condemned by the authorities who feared his influence. He escaped execution by leaving Athens in 323 BC but he died the following year at the age of 62.
